Many businesses start on the free WhatsApp Business app on a phone. It works well for one or two people. Problems begin when more people need to answer, when you want to message hundreds of customers, or when you want some replies to happen automatically.
What the app does well
- Free and quick to set up
- Quick replies, labels and a catalogue
- Good for one owner on one phone
Where it runs out
- Only one phone, and a few linked devices, can use the number
- No shared inbox built for a team, with automation and AI behind it
- Limited broadcast lists, and customers must have your number saved to receive them
- No way to connect it to your CRM, your store or an AI agent
What the API adds
The WhatsApp Business API is Meta’s official way for companies to use WhatsApp at scale. With a platform like Zenvlo Engage on top, a whole team shares one inbox, a person can take over from the AI at any time, customers can be tagged, campaigns go to the contacts you choose using templates Meta has approved, and automations and AI agents can answer common questions.
Rules to know
- Customers must opt in to hear from you.
- To start a chat with a customer, or to message after 24 hours of silence, you use an approved template.
- Inside the 24 hours after a customer writes to you, you can reply freely.
Which should you choose?
If one person handles every chat and you send few broadcasts, the app is fine. The moment two or more people share the work, or you want order updates and cart reminders to send themselves, the API pays for itself in saved time.
